Dr. Mehtar-Tani’s research focuses on Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in the regimes of high energy and high density. His work aims to understand how QCD jets — coherent quantum systems produced in high-energy collisions — evolve and interact with hot QCD matter. The overarching goal is to elucidate non-equilibrium QCD dynamics and to probe the transport properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In this context, he has recently investigated novel emergent phenomena in such open quantum systems, including turbulent energy loss, non-local anomalous diffusion, and color decoherence. These effects provide new avenues to probe the microscopic dynamics of the QGP in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC.

Dr. Mehtar-Tani is also deeply interested in the structure of the proton and nuclei at high energies, where they are dominated by a dense and coherent system of gluons. A key question he investigates concerns the transition from a weakly interacting system of partons to a saturated state of soft gluons. Understanding this transition is essential for unraveling the dynamics of gluon saturation — a central objective of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC).
