Roberto Than started his career in cryogenics at the Superconducting Super Collider, Waxahachie,Texas, where he worked on the cryogenic system for the Magnet Test Lab (MTL) and the accelerator system (magnet) string test (ASST). From there he spend many years in industry delivering helium and nitrogen cryogenic systems for aerospace industry in USA and Japan, National labs, US Naval laboratory, NASA test facilities, specialty systems for LIGO observatories and the Subaru telescope.

He has been with the Collider Accelerator department cryogenic system for 19 years and group lead for 12 years. He has worked on 2 Kelvin and 4.5 Kelvin helium systems to cool superconducting devices for electron-lens, Coherent-Electron-Cooling (CEC), Low-Energy-RHIC-electron-Cooling (LEReC), and 56MHz storage cavity experiments in the RHIC collider.
