UPTON, NY—Jack Anderson, currently the Interim Director of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), has been named Deputy Director for Operations at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory, effective in mid-October.
Anderson, a proven leader who has held multiple high-level management positions at three national labs, will replace Mike Bebon, who plans to step aside after a decade of achievement as deputy director and take on a new role at the Laboratory.
"We are delighted that we have been able to attract someone of Jack's stature and experience to Brookhaven," said Laboratory Director Doon Gibbs. "I know that he is as excited as we are about the outstanding scientific opportunities ahead of us."
Anderson is currently the Chief Operating Officer and Associate Laboratory Director for Operations at Fermilab. He is also serving as Fermilab's Interim Laboratory Director until new Director Nigel Lockyer starts there on September 3.
Prior to joining Fermilab, Anderson was Director of Integrated Performance Management at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 2007 to 2012. During this time, he served on the Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operations committee, which advises Brookhaven Lab and the BSA Board on operational issues. Before that, he worked at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory from 1990 to 2007 in a number of progressively responsible leadership positions in operations, including as Division Head for Security and Emergency Preparedness, Division Head for Facilities and Environmental Management, and Department Head for Environment, Safety, & Health and Infrastructure Support.
Anderson has also worked for Florida Power and Light Company, Cincinnati Gas & Electric, and General Dynamics. He has a B.S. in Industrial Engineering, a B.A. in Economics from Rutgers University, an M.B.A. from Rider University, and has completed extensive studies in Public Policy at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University.
Gibbs praised Bebon for his many notable achievements during 10 years of service as Brookhaven's deputy director, including his leadership of projects aimed at renewing the Lab's infrastructure and his work with the community, among many others.
"Mike has served in key leadership roles at Brookhaven for more than three decades, and his strong commitment to Brookhaven and its mission—and his deep concern for the people who work here—are hallmarks of his service," Gibbs said. "I'm pleased for him and look forward to working with him in a new capacity."
