From left to right, this shows the East Carriage, the South Muon Magnet, and the Central Magnet. The beam pipe that goes down the middle of the Central Magnet and the South Muon Magnet has been removed.
The PHENIX detector is undergoing some major changes before the next RHIC run. The beam pipe is being replaced with a smaller diameter pipe for a new silicon detector, many tons of stainless steel absorber have been added in front of the muon arms, all of which required disconnecting and moving three large spectrometer components--the East Carriage, the South Muon Magnet, and the Central Magnet, in addition to the installation of new muon detectors in the tunnel.
