Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need to include overhead?

Yes. Include overhead in your budgets just as for an LDRD proposal.

With overhead included, my project will cost more than $50,000. Is that a problem?

No. The fifty-thousand-dollar mark is solely to determine the review process.

How much can I apply for?

At this time there is no upper limit for funds requests. Request enough funds to realistically allow completion of the project on the schedule proposed. Projects may be funded for less than the amount requested.

LDRD funding is for 2 or 3 years. How many years will TM fund?

Technology maturation funding is intended to support no more than two years of effort. Research proposed for TM funding should be at a late enough stage to allow its maturation into a licensable technology by the end of the proposed project.

Can post-docs be included in the project?

Yes, as long as they are BSA employees.

Can I use consultants?

No. Only BSA employees may participate in projects funded under the TM program.

Then why does the budget in the PIQ say “Technical Collaborators/Consultants”?

Historical reasons. Technical collaborators should be BSA employees, not collaborators from other institutions.

How do I find out if someone is a BSA employee?

Have the individual contact Human Resources to determine his or her employment status.

Will projects be considered if they do not lead directly to IP and/or licensing?

Yes. No one can determine beforehand whether IP or licensing will be generated by a particular project. The goal is to transfer technology by any means, including licensing, CRADAs, Work for Others, or some other way.
