26th Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) Users' Meeting

Dates: March 26–28, 2024

This workshop will be held as an in-person event.

Call for Proposals: User proposals for ATF beam time are now being accepted for an April–July 2024 run. After this time, our plans, based on circumstances from last year, will be to shut down as we prepare for the ATF Internal Readiness Review and the Accelerator Readiness Review. To ensure full evaluation, interested researchers should submit their proposals by Saturday, March 1, 2025, 5:00 pm, EST. Please note that the UED Facility is no longer part of DOE-SC User Facility operations and proposals are no longer being accepted for that facility as part of the ATF proposal call. If you have an interest in beam time at the UED facility, please email the UED Access Team directly.

We are encouraging all potential users to attend this meeting in-person. However, the meeting will support hybrid access via ZOOM for registered attendees.

Motivation

The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) is a DOE Office of Science User Facility that provides users with high-brightness electron- and laser-beams, and ultrafast electron diffraction capabilities. The Accelerator Facilities Division at Brookhaven National Laboratory has provided a facility for users to study the properties of modern accelerators and new techniques of particle acceleration and radiation generation for over 30 years. It is the designated user facility for the Accelerator Stewardship Program.

The UED Facility will separate from DOE-SC User Facility operations effective April 1, 2023 and proposals are no longer being accepted for that facility as part of the ATF proposal call. The UED facility will resume operations as a non-designated user facility later in the year with a separate proposal submission mechanism.

This will be an in-person meeting with limited ZOOM support for remote presenters and registered attendees.

Motivation

The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) is a proposal-driven, DOE Office of Science User Facility that operates under the Accelerator Stewardship Program. The facility is dedicated to long-term R&D into the Physics of Beams and the development of new accelerator technologies. Core capabilities of the ATF include a high-brightness photoinjector electron gun, a 70 MeV linac, high power lasers synchronized to the electron beam at the picosecond level, two general purpose beam lines with energy spectrometers, and a sophisticated accelerator control system.

ATF users' from universities, national labs and industry carry out Advanced Accelerator R&D and are studying the interactions of high power electromagnetic radiation and high brightness electron beams, including laser acceleration of electrons and Free-Electron Lasers. Other topics include the development of electron beams with extremely high brightness, photoinjectors, electron beam and radiation diagnostics and computer controls. A new capability, the Ultrafast Electron Diffraction (UED) Facility, will also be available for proposed experiments this year.

During this 2-day meeting, the ATF Program Advisory Committee (APAC) will review the progress of the ongoing user experimental program and approve proposals for new experiments that are consistent with the ATF's mission within the Accelerator Stewardship Program. The meeting will also provide an opportunity for users to report their work to APAC and the research community, to pursue collaboration, and to obtain an overview of the ATF's current performance, achievements and future plans.

Proposal Submission System

Motivation

The Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) is a user facility for accelerator and beam physicists. Its users come from the USA and abroad, from universities, industry and national laboratories. As a an Office of Science User Facility in service of Accelerator Stewardship under the program of High Energy Physic, the ATF has proven to be an excellent place to train students in the physics of beams. Experiments at the ATF cover a variety of subjects including laser acceleration, generation of coherent radiation, and advanced accelerator instrumentation.

The use of the ATF electron beam, lasers and diagnostic tools is free of charge for users. The ATF staff is committed to providing expertise and assistance in the design and implementation of user experiments. Proposals to carry out experiments are evaluated in a peer review process by the Program Advisory Committee (APAC). The APAC will meet during the Users' Meeting.

Experiments at the ATF cover a variety of subjects, such as laser acceleration, generation of coherent radiation, and advanced accelerator instrumentation.

The use of the ATF electron beam, lasers and diagnostic tools is free of charge for users. The ATF staff is committed to providing expertise and assistance in the design and implementation of user experiments. Proposals to carry out experiments are evaluated in a peer review process by the ATF Program Advisory Committee. The ATF Program Advisory Committee (APAC) will meet during the Users' Meeting.
