A Message from Andreas Liapis

information from the Users' Executive Committee

Dear CFN community,

Andreas Liapis

Andreas Liapis

Greetings! My name is Andreas Liapis and I am the chair of the 2022-2023 CFN Users’ Executive Committee (UEC). As the vice chair to Trishelle Copeland-Johnson for 2021-2022, you will likely recognize me. I am excited to be able to continue to represent the CFN user community and build upon the efforts of the last year.

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of serving as one of the hosts of the NSLS-II & CFN Joint Users’ Meeting. I want to thank everyone who made that meeting successful. I had a front-row seat for the enthusiasm and spirit of collaboration that pervaded the meeting, and I hope to carry that energy through my tenure as chair.

As we look to the future of this facility, particularly as the restrictions required by COVID-19 begin to lift and we are able to come together in-person again, I would like to urge us all to take this time to re-evaluate and re-commit to our goals as scientists. To quote CFN Director Chuck Black, let’s do work that matters

In the near future, the UEC and I are looking forward to celebrating an important day for nanoscientists: the National Nanotechnology Day, which takes place on October 9. To mark the day, CFN will hold its Annual CFN Image Contest. The contest gives us a chance to express our artistic sensibilities in two categories: Scientific and Technical (micrographs and images relating to CFN research) and Life at the CFN (images of the facility, instrumentation, offices, etc). You can submit one entry per category, and we strongly encourage you to do so!

The first-place winners of each category will be framed and displayed in CFN’s main corridor. We will also share some of the images on social media and the CFN calendar. To submit, send your entries to Pamela Ciufo, ciufo@bnl.gov, by October 9. Image files should be in either PDF, JPG, TIF, or PNG format.

For inspiration, here are the first-place winners and runners-up from last year:

I welcome you to reach out to the UEC at any time—that is what we are here for! We want your ideas and feedback as we continually work to improve the CFN user experience.

On behalf of the UEC, I wish you a joyful, safe, and productive 2023!
