Emergency Preparedness at BNL

Whether you are at home or at work, knowing how to prepare and what to do when an emergency occurs can make all the difference. BNL has prepared a brochure that provides key emergency response information for BNL employees, users, and guests that can help them prepare for the unexpected.

Building Fire Alarm Bells

Any ringing of fire alarms or upon notification by Local Emergency Coordinator (LEC), evacuate the building immediately.

Site Siren & Warning Instructions

• Continuous sounding of siren for 4 minutes
  Show instructions / listen to siren

  If you are in a building when this siren sounds, proceed immediately to the Building Assembly Area and await instructions from your Local Emergency Coordinator.

  If you are in your car, drive to the nearest building, locate the building assembly area, and follow instructions from the Local Emergency Coordinator.

  If you are walking outdoors, proceed to the nearest building, locate the building assembly area, and follow instructions from the Local Emergency Coordinator.

  Shelter in Place Siren

• Intermittent sounding of site sirens for 4 minutes
  Show instructions / listen to siren

  Evacuate the site immediately.

  If you are in a building when this siren sounds, follow instructions of Lab emergency forces on sequence and routes for evacuation through tone alert system and/or e-mail.

  If you are in your car, follow instructions of Lab emergency forces personnel posted at roads and intersections.

  If you are walking outdoors, proceed to your car or the nearest building and follow instructions of Lab emergency forces.

  If you are in the housing area, proceed indoors, close all windows and doors, and await further instruction from the Laboratory emergency forces or housing personnel.

  If you have a child/children on the site at the Child Development Center or Red School House pick up your child/children and proceed off site, following the instructions of posted Laboratory emergency forces personnel.

  Evacuate Site Siren

• Emergency voice warnings heard on-site
  Show instructions / listen to warnings

  Follow all voice commands heard over the labs emergency warning system.

  BNL Monthly PENS Test Message "This audio message will be used to test the PENS System on a monthly basis."

  PENS Alert Signal "You will hear this alert signel before any instructions are given by the PENS system."

  The following voice commands will be heard from the site sirens.

  Test Warning "This is a Test of the Brookhaven National Laboratory Emergency Warning System. This is only a test."

  Severe Weather Warning "The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Weather Warning. Please take cover indoors."

  Tornado Warning Warning "The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Warning. Please move to the interior areas of any building."

  Fire on Site Warning "Fire on Site. Please stand by for further instructions."

  Emergency on Site Warning "Emergency on Site. Please stand by for further instructions."

  All Clear Warning "This is an All Clear. Please resume your normal activities."

  Drill on Site Warning "There is a Drill on Site. There is only a Drill on Site."

  Security Alert Warning "Security Alert. Security Alert. Remain where you are. Lock doors if possible and wait for the all clear."

Shelter In Place

• Show instructions / listen to siren

  Gather in your indoor assembly area or shelter in place area based on the instructions given by the Phone Emergency Notification System (PENS).

  Turn off any heating, ventilation, or air conditioning unit in your work area.

  Turn off lights.

  Close doors behind you as you move to your shelter in place area.

  Wait in shelter in place area for further instructions.

  PENS Alert Signal "You will hear this alert signel before any instructions are given by the PENS system."
