Fire Protection Engineering guides the Laboratory in its efforts to control in a cost-effective manner the risks from fire, windstorm, collapse, and other perils normally associated with fire insurance coverage. The goals include protecting people, the environment, property, and programs.

Fire Protection Engineering accomplishes this function by:

Developing and supporting the Laboratory Fire Protection PolicyProviding consultations and technical support to all BNL organizations charged with implementation of the policyPerforming Engineering Design Reviews, Occupational Readiness Reviews, acceptance tests on fire alarm and sprinkler systems, internal audits of the Fire Protection Program, life safety surveys, and fire hazard analysesServing as the contact for all external appraisals.
