Box Labeled 'Explosive C' Safely Removed From Brookhaven National Laboratory Site

UPTON, NY — During the packaging and moving of contents from an office at Brookhaven National Laboratory's National Synchrotron Light Source-1 facility this morning, an employee found a box with a U.S. Department of Transportation "Explosive C" label. The employee notified the Laboratory Protection Division, which immediately removed the device to an outdoor location and then contacted the Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) requesting its assistance. The SCPD responded and safely removed the box to an off-site police firing range for further evaluation. The box contained commercially manufactured small industrial detonators. Detonators of this type are used in a variety of industrial applications.

The devices appeared to have been properly packaged for commercial shipping. The Lab is conducting a full investigation, including working with the SCPD, device manufacturer, and facility management.
