CFN Marks National Nanotechnology Day with 15th Annual Image Contest and Other Activities
On "Nano Day," the Center for Functional Nanomaterials will celebrate the science and impact of the ultrasmall
September 23, 2024
Oct. 9 is National Nanotechnology Day, an annual event led by the National Nanotechnology Initiative. National Nanotechnology Day was conceived to raise awareness of the impact of nanotechnology through events and activities held by schools, labs, and organizations. The date (10/9) is a nod to the nanometer scale: 10-9 meters, or one billionth of a meter.

Left: "Photoelectrochemical Brine Splitting" was submitted by CFN Ph.D. student and user Zhaoyi Xi (first-place image from the 2023 contest in the Scientific & Technical category). Right: "Pt (100) surface after two cycles of CO adsorption-desorption" was submitted by CFN user (and former Brookhaven Lab postdoc) Gengnan Li of Argonne National Lab (second-place winner from the same category). See below for the two winning images from the "Life at the CFN" category.

Left: "Stuck in the CFN Elevator k-Space" was submitted by CFN staff scientist Ashley Head (the first-place winner of the "Life at the CFN" category). Right: "My Life at the CFN" was submitted by CFN user Mueed Ahmad of Stony Brook University (second-place winner from the same category).
The Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science user facility at DOE’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, is one of five DOE Nanoscale Science Research Centers that are participating. In keeping with previous years, CFN will host its annual image contest for CFN staff and users. There will be a winner and runner-up for two categories: “Scientific and Technical” and “Life at the CFN.”
For submission details, see the 2024 CFN Image Contest Flier (PDF).
Additional Nano Day celebrations will include:
- Sharing a virtual tour of CFN facilities
- Creating social media posts to celebrate Nano Day — #CFNatBrookhaven
- Inviting CFN staff, collaborators, and users to the Nano Day Coffee Break on Oct. 9, which is sponsored by the CFN Users Executive Committee and will also celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Hispanic Heritage Month
Brookhaven National Laboratory is supported by the Office of Science of the U.S. Department of Energy. The Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time.
