Michael Goldman Named Brookhaven Lab's General Counsel

UPTON, NY — Michael Goldman, who has 31 years of experience as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, has been named General Counsel for the Laboratory. He succeeds Gregory Fess in the position, who left the Laboratory in June 2008.
In his new position, Goldman is responsible for the legal issues that are part of the Laboratory’s business, including offering expertise on contracts. One of two full-time attorneys employed by the Laboratory, Goldman specializes in human relations and contracts and procurement law as they pertain to Laboratory operations. He also oversees the negotiations and litigation required for lawsuits against the Laboratory.
In addition, Goldman serves as Secretary for Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), the company that manages Brookhaven Lab for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). He is responsible for ensuring that BSA is in compliance with its contract with DOE.
“Lawyers are sometimes viewed as obstructionists, creating hurdles to prevent the objective that the client wants to accomplish,” Goldman said. “Conversely, I take pride in helping the Laboratory management to smoothly and efficiently accomplish their business objectives, consistent with the law.”
Michael Goldman received his undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University in 1966 and his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law in 1969. He then worked for several small law firms in Manhattan, served as house counsel for two small public companies, and was in private practice before joining Brookhaven Lab in 1977 as Associate Counsel. He was promoted to General Attorney in 1982, Laboratory Counsel in 1986, and Deputy General Counsel in 1998. In June 2008, he became Acting General Counsel, the position he held until he was named General Counsel in November 2008.
