Edward Nowak Named Manager of Brookhaven Lab's Safety & Health Services Division

UPTON, NY — Edward Nowak, former director of Johnson & Johnson’s Global Pharma R&D Environmental Health and Safety, has been named manager of the Safety & Health Services Division at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory, effective June 8.
In his new position, Nowak is responsible for managing 31 people and an annual budget of approximately $4.7 million. The Safety & Health Services Division oversees safety engineering, industrial hygiene and chemical management for the Laboratory’s almost 2,900 employees, and its contractors and visitors. It assures compliance with DOE orders and the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety & Health standards, and monitors the workplace for all forms of non-radiological hazards to workers, such as chemicals, magnetic fields, confined space, ergonomics, heat stress, traffic, and electrical hazards. The division also monitors and analyzes all reported accidents resulting in injuries at the workplace to prevent future accidents and make the Laboratory as safe as possible. When injuries occur, the division works directly with the Laboratory’s Occupational Medical Clinic to ensure a safe transition back to work.
“The best safety initiative empowers all employees to address safety deficiencies as they find them, whether they concern their own or their coworkers’ working conditions, which the Brookhaven Lab community is trained to do,” Nowak said. “My current focus is to understand the Laboratory’s working environment and needs, which will allow me to further advance its strong performance in health and safety.”
Edward Nowak earned a B.S. in civil engineering in 1977 and an M.S. in environmental engineering in 1982, both from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He worked as a project scientist for Roy F. Weston Environmental Consultants from 1977 to 1978, and then moved on to become an environmental engineer at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1978 to 1986.
From 1986 to 2001, Nowak held positions of increasing responsibilities at Bell Laboratories, leading to becoming senior environmental health & safety manager. In 2001, Nowak joined Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development, where he worked his way up to become director, Global Pharma R&D environmental health and safety. He held that position until he came to Brookhaven.
Nowak is a qualified environmental professional, certified by the Institute of Professional Environmental Practice, and a certified hazardous materials manager, certified by the Institute of Hazardous Materials Management.
