Special Appearance by Michael Jazz Trio

UPTON, NY – Trombonist Ray Anderson will perform at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory on Saturday, December 5, 2009, at 8 p.m. in the Berkner auditorium. Opening the performance will be the Michael Jazz Trio. Sponsored by the BNL Music Club, the event is open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory 16 and older must bring a photo I.D.
Anderson, known for his unconventional use of the plunger mute, dynamic performance, and demonstrative vocal-like tones, will perform original compositions, including the popular, “If I ever had a home it was a slide trombone.” He was named for five straight years as best trombonist by the Down Beat Critics Poll and declared “the most exciting slide brass player of his generation.”
A native of Chicago’s Hyde Park area, Anderson took up the trombone in fourth grade, influenced by his father's Dixieland recordings. In 2001, he became a guest faculty member of the Music Department at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and, in 2003, was hired as the Director of Jazz Studies. He has received numerous awards for musical excellence.
Before Anderson takes the stage at this performance, the young Michael Jazz Trio will show off their talent. The trio, who all hold the middle name Michael, consists of 15-year-old Matthew on keyboard, 13-year-old David on alto and tenor sax, and 9-year-old Jordan on drums. The three were born and raised in Central Islip, New York. They have played at various venues and been featured in the Southampton Press, Islip Bulletin, and appeared live on radio stations.
Inspired by music legends like the late John Coltrane and Duke Ellington, the boys continue to fine-tune their talent while maintaining academic excellence. In 2008, they released their first CD, “The Beginning.”
