Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory Collaborate to Offer Scholarships and Internships to Students in the Women in Science and Engineering Program (WISE)

STONY BROOK, N.Y., February 18, 2010 — Stony Brook students enrolled in the Women in Science and Engineering Program (WISE) are eligible for scholarships of up to $3,500 to recognize their achievements in research in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, and technology fields. In addition, four internships at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) are available to students in the WISE program.
WISE is an honors program that is designed to engage women who have ability and interest in mathematics, science, or engineering in the excitement and challenge of research. The program is multifaceted and provides many services for its students including: mentoring, academic advising, research opportunities (all first year students participate in research), scholarships and professional development.
“The key is to engage and retain high achieving women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. The ultimate goal is to create and sustain a diversified workforce by increasing the number of women in fields that historically have not had adequate female representation,” said Carrie-Ann Miller, Director of WISE.
Scholarships
Sponsored by Stony Brook’s Office of the Vice President for Brookhaven National Laboratory Affairs (OVPBNLA), a total of $10,000 in scholarships is available to WISE students who are in their second academic year and above. Scholarships will be given in the range of $1,000-$3,500.
Complete applications for scholarships must be received by the WISE office by March 20, 2010.
Scholarships will be decided by a committee made up of BWIS (Brookhaven Women in Science), the Office of Education at BNL, and WISE faculty and staff. Awards will be given to full-time students who are enrolled in WISE. Students must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.2.
Internships
Funding for four internships will be provided by Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) for four WISE students to participate in internships at BNL through the Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) administered through the Office of Educational Programs. Students will be placed with a mentor to conduct research for 10 weeks. Students will receive a stipend, and housing will be available for non-local students.
This is a great opportunity for women who have aspirations for a career in science to gain valuable research experience.
