Winning Projects at Brookhaven Lab's Science Fair – From the Effect of Oil on Aquatic Plants to Surviving a Long Island Tornado

UPTON, NY — The Elementary School Science Fair at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory drew 550 entries from 118 Suffolk County schools. The Laboratory’s Office of Educational Programs coordinated the fair, which was held on May 7 and attended by hundreds of students, parents, and teachers. Brookhaven Lab scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects.
The first-place winners are:
Riley Ackerman, kindergarten, Flower Hill Primary School, Huntington Union Free School District, for his project “Does a heavier hen lay a larger or heavier egg?”
Peyton Schilling, first grade, Bellerose Avenue Elementary School, Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, “Gluten Free Paper Mache.”
Hannah Fioramonti, second grade, Pines Elementary School, Hauppauge School District, “Dirty Hands, Dirty Money.”
Isabella DeBrino, third grade, Bellerose Avenue Elementary School, Northport-East Northport Union Free School District, “Weather the Weather.”
Danielle Ohrtman, fourth grade, Miller Avenue Elementary School, Shoreham-Wading River Central School District, “Survive a Long Island Tornado!”
Amanda Osman, fifth grade, Burr Intermediate School, Commack Union Free School District, “Extra! Extra! Read Oil About it!”
Philip Tubiolo, sixth grade, James Wilson Young Middle School, Bayport- Blue Point School District, “Oil vs. Photosynthesis: The effect of oil on aquatic plants.”
