UPTON, NY — Rush Holt, chief executive officer of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and a 16-year U.S. congressman whose eighth and final term ended earlier this year, will give a BSA Distinguished Lecture at the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory on Thursday, June 11, at 1:30 p.m. in Berkner Hall. His talk is titled "Advancing Science."

Holt has been the chief executive officer of AAAS and executive publisher of the Science family of journals since February 2015, after serving New Jersey's 12th Congressional District as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1999 to 2015.

Holt also served as an arms control expert at the U.S. State Department, where he monitored the nuclear programs for countries including Iraq, Iran, North Korea, and the former Soviet Union. He was an assistant director of DOE's Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory from 1987 to 1998 as well as a faculty member at Swarthmore College, where he taught courses in physics and public policy from 1980 to 1988, save a year spent on Capitol Hill as a AAAS/American Physical Society Science and Technology policy fellow starting in 1982.

Holt earned a Ph.D. in physics from New York University in 1981 and holds honorary degrees from Monmouth University, Rider University, and Thomas Edison State College. He is an elected fellow of AAAS, the American Physical Society, and Sigma Xi, and a former director's visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study.

Scientific American magazine named Holt one of the "50 National Visionaries Contributing to a Brighter Technological Future" and the Science Coalition recognized him as a "Champion of Science." He has received numerous awards and holds a patent for a solar-pond technology that harnesses energy from sunlight.
