Brookhaven Lab Employees Help 20 Local Families Have a Holly, Jolly Holiday

For the sixth year, generous Brookhaven Lab employees donated gifts—including clothing, electronics, food, toys, and bicycles—to 20 local families for the Adopt-a-Family program.

“Coordinating this event is one of my favorite things we do here at the Lab,” said Tara Shiels of the Stakeholder and Community Relations Office, who organizes the program. “The Lab began participating in this program in 2012 as part of the relief efforts following Superstorm Sandy. I am overwhelmed by the kindness and dedication of our employees who ask that the Lab participate in this program year after year.”

Groups of employees across the site collect contributions and shop for items from a wish list supplied by the Colonial Youth and Family Services (CYFS) in Mastic. The Lab drivers then load up a box truck and deliver the packages to CYFS for families to receive.

“The separate little stories and the thank-you notes we receive are a reminder that working together for programs like this can have a positive impact on a family’s holiday,” added Shiels.
