DOE Lab Library and Science & Technical Info Meeting Held at Brookhaven

The annual combined National Laboratory Library Coalition (NLLC) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific & Technical Information (OSTI) Scientific and Technical Information Program (STIP) Workshop was hosted at Brookhaven Lab May 29-June 3.

Attendees included research librarians from DOE and OSTI, STIP managers from across the national lab complex, and national laboratory library and information management representatives.

“The scientific and technical information staff at the labs play a vital role in ensuring our scientists’ research is properly announced and easily accessible to the broader research community,” said Brookhaven Lab Research Library, Publications Office & Records Information Manager Patricia Garvey, who served as host for the annual workshop. “This helps our work make the most impact—and helps the funding agencies assess program impact, which is critical to our success.”

The annual workshop gives the NLLC and OSTI staff the chance to discuss their programs’ progress and challenges, deliver lab site reports, and give public access updates. They also take the opportunity to conduct orientations for new STIP managers.

Workshop speakers included Brookhaven Chief Information Officer Tom Schlagel, who discussed Brookhaven’s information technology role in the national laboratory complex and global research community, and OSTI Director Brian Hitson, who talked about DOE’s progress in implementing public access requirements and OSTI’s and STIP’s contributions.

Participants in the OSTI portion of the workshop met with Brookhaven Lab Deputy Director for Science & Technology Robert Tribble and Deputy Director for Operations Jack Anderson to discuss Brookhaven’s facilities and research.

Attendees also visited the National Synchrotron Light Source II and met with Lisa Miller, manager of user services, communications, education, and outreach. Representatives from the Lab’s National Nuclear Data Center and the Computational Science Initiative also met with workshop participants to talk about their role and the importance and unique capabilities of their programs.

Next year’s workshop will be hosted at Argonne National Lab.
