Erik is the onsite lead scientist for the X-ray Footprinting of Biological Materials (XFP, 17-BM) beamline, a role that he has held since 2018. XFP is operated by the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine as a Partner Beamline at the National Synchrotron Light Source II, and is dedicated to synchrotron X-ray footprinting, an emerging method to probe the structure and dynamics of biomolecules in the native solution state.
Previously, Erik was responsible for user support for a biological X-ray absorption spectroscopy PRT program at the NSLS from 2010-2014 during his postdoctoral training. This was followed by support of NSLS bioXAS users at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource as part of the NSLS to NSLS-II transition (2015-2016), along with major contributions to the construction and technical / scientific commissioning of the XFP beamline in 2015-2017.

Research Activities
Methodological developments in synchrotron X-ray footprinting (instrumentation and experimental strategies) to enable its application to increasingly complex systems, X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopies for the structure of metal sites in biology, integration of multiple synchrotron-based methods to understand biological systems up to the cellular scale.
Education
After completing undergraduate studies at the University at Buffalo (SUNY) with a bachelors in science degree in 2002, Erik later undertook doctoral training in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota, leading to a Ph.D. degree in inorganic chemistry in 2010.
