Expertise

Sergei has nearly three decades of experience in accelerator science, particle colliders and electron beam cooling. He came to Jefferson Lab from Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, where he had held numerous roles over his nearly 25-year career there. He served as head of accelerator science programs, with earlier roles as the chief accelerator officer and accelerator division director, leading all aspects of the Fermilab accelerator complex operations, upgrades and research.

Sergei also led the development of the very challenging electron cooling system for Fermilab's Recycler, which was central to achieving record luminosity performance at the Tevatron. Additionally, he carried out a world-leading R&D program in advanced beam dynamics experiments at Fermilab's Integral Optics Test Accelerator storage ring, including the first demonstration of optical stochastic cooling.

Education

Sergei attended Novosibirsk University in Russia and received his Ph.D. in accelerator physics from Indiana University. He has won numerous accolades throughout his distinguished career, and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). In 2007, he received the U.S. Particle Accelerator School Prize for Achievement in Accelerator Physics and Technology. In 2015, he received the Dieter Möhl Medal, sponsored by CERN. He has also served as chair of the APS Division of Physics of Beams.

Professional Appointments

In addition to his Fermilab appointment, he also held the position of professor (part-time) at the University of Chicago. He presently holds the position of Jefferson Lab Professor of Physics at Old Dominion University.
