Public Service Loan Forgiveness
Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) is now a qualifying employer under the U.S. Department of Education’s Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program. The program forgives the remaining balance on certain federal student loans after borrowers make 120 qualifying payments on an accepted repayment plan while working full-time for an eligible employer.
Qualifying for PSLF
To qualify for PSLF, you must:
- be employed by a U.S. federal, state, local, or tribal government or qualifying not-for-profit organization (federal service includes U.S. military service);
- work full-time for that agency or organization;
- have Direct Loans (or consolidate other federal student loans into a Direct Loan);
- repay your loans under an income-driven repayment plan or a 10-year Standard Repayment Plan; and
- make a total of 120 qualifying monthly payments that need not be consecutive.

How to Confirm Eligibility
Use the PSLF Help Tool to confirm you’re eligible and submit your PSLF form. You should have your most recent W-2 from BSA (or your prior qualifying employer) or your Employer Identification Number on hand.
When the form asks, “How do you want this employer to sign your PSLF form?” select “Electronic Signature” and enter dcovati@bnl.gov. The form will be routed to a Human Resources representative who will certify your BSA employment.
Eligible borrowers are encouraged to submit a PSLF form each year to keep track of their progress toward forgiveness by keeping their qualifying payments up to date.
