Dear Fellow CFN Users:

The CFN users’ association aims to promote and encourage research at the CFN by providing organized discussions among users of the facility as well as between the user community and the facility administration. We also work to address questions of general principles, trends, and development of user needs.

CFN Users’ Association Town Hall meeting

All CFN users who hold active BNL appointments are members of the CFN Users’ association. The charter for the association and for 2015-2016 Board members are available online at http://www.cfnuec.org/. The board of the association (CFN UEC) and I, as the 2015-2016 chair, would like to invite all users to join us for a town meeting on January 13, 2016, which will be held at the CFN in conference room C. A conference call will also be set up allowing users who can’t make it on-site to join. Please look for the e-mail announcement that will be sent around with details on how to join.

2015 NSLS-II & CFN Joint Users' Meeting

The CFN UEC, jointly with the NSLS-II UEC, will be hosting the annual NSLS-II/CFN Joint Users’ Meeting from May 23-25, 2016. The theme is “Illuminating the Future.” As always, the program will include invited talks, workshops, a poster session, and exhibits highlighting new technology and instrumentation—all offering opportunities to learn about the latest developments in synchrotron and nanoscience experimentation that can impact your own research. The meeting will be a great opportunity for users to interact with scientists from diverse disciplines that use the NSLS-II and CFN facilities.

You should have received an email from the CFN users office inviting you to propose workshops for that upcoming meeting. The meeting workshops are designed to showcase the current work of NSLS-II and CFN users, as well as new techniques and scientific areas that we can look forward to exploring.
Your participation is key to the success of the meeting and I encourage all CFN users to participate to the workshops, attend the meeting and present their research at the poster sessions.  To propose a workshop, please provide the following:

  • Workshop title
  • Workshop organizer(s)
  • Speakers (speaker list can be tentative; please include tentative topics)
  • Contacts at BNL
  • Workshop description (a paragraph describing the workshop’s subject; include any additional comments that may help support your proposal)
  • Duration of workshop (full- or half-day)
  • A preliminary estimated travel budget for reimbursing expenses for your speakers. (NSLS-II and CFN UECs provide a workshop budget that cannot exceed $7000 for full-day workshops and $3500 for half-day workshops).

UEC matters

As always, I encourage every CFN facility user to interact with the UEC and communicate your concerns so we can be effective in improving the user experience. You can contact me or other UEC members by phone or email. Check our website for contact information and the latest updates from the UEC.

Wishing you all a successful 2016 at the CFN.
