Freedom 250

Brookhaven National Laboratory is planning a series of programs in support of the national commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 2026.

Brookhaven is well-positioned to contribute to this milestone. Its 5,300-acre site reflects a uniquely American story of service, transformation, and innovation. Before becoming a national laboratory, the site served as Camp Upton, where soldiers trained for their service in World War I and again in World War II. In 1947, the site was transformed into Brookhaven National Laboratory, founded to advance the peaceful uses of atomic energy. This evolution—from military training grounds to a world-class scientific institution—makes Brookhaven especially well-suited to connect the nation’s history with its future.

Planned Freedom 250 activities

History Lectures

Seven public historical lectures exploring the use of the site from 1776 on through to the present day, including its history as Camp Upton, preparing soldiers for service during World Wars I and II, and its transformation in 1947 to a national laboratory dedicated to scientific research.

Science Lectures

Three science lectures for employees and invited guests highlighting Brookhaven’s current research including the design, construction, and purpose of the Electron-Ion Collider, light-enabled science at the National Synchrotron Light Source II, and its contributions to national priorities such as the Genesis Mission for AI, as well as other science that will shape our nation’s future—and benefit the world.

Veterans Events

Two commemorative veterans events for employees and invited guests on Memorial Day and Veterans Day to honor veterans and those in military service who gave their lives for our country and recognize the site’s longstanding connection to national service.

Together, these activities position Brookhaven as both a steward of an integral American story and a forward-looking institution whose mission continues to serve the nation. Brookhaven’s Freedom 250 programming provides a meaningful opportunity to highlight the site’s service legacy, the Lab’s founding in the early atomic era, and its continued leadership in science and innovation.
