May 14, 2004
Upton, NY - During a visit to Brookhaven National Laboratory_s Elementary School Science Fair on May 8, Congressman Tim Bishop (First Congressional District, Suffolk County) said he remembered with fondness the day that his daughter - now 25 years old - won a prize in the Lab_s annual science fair. Brookhaven Lab has been sponsoring the fair for twenty years.
Addressing Brookhaven Lab scientists and local elementary school teachers who volunteered to be judges in the fair, Congressman Bishop said, "There are not enough scientists in this country," and he praised the fair, which aims to interest students in science and encourage their efforts in scientific exploration. This year, students entered 470 projects in the contest from 97 Suffolk County schools.
Congressman Bishop looked at numerous science projects, occasionally stopping to speak with the students. Here he took an interest in Phillip Dennis_s project, titled "The Magnetic Boats." Phillip is a first-grade student in the Brentwood Union Free School District. His parents, Donald and Paula Dennis, are in the background.
