Volunteer Expo to be Held at Brookhaven Lab, November 3

EVENT: The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory will hold a volunteer expo, called "Sharing Our Caring."
WHEN: Wednesday, November 3, 2004, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
WHERE: Berkner Hall, Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Laboratory is located on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46), one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.
DETAILS: Representatives from 30 local charitable and community organizations - from the American Red Cross to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary -will be at Brookhaven Lab to discuss opportunities for volunteerism and to provide information about their services to Brookhaven employees and retirees as well as the local community. Also, Brookhaven employees who volunteer for these organizations will be on hand to discuss their volunteer experiences. At noon, Brookhaven Lab's Director Praveen Chaudhari and Deputy Assistant Laboratory Director for Finance Greg Ogeka will speak briefly about volunteerism.
Some 20 percent of Brookhaven's 2,700 employees perform some form of volunteer work. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), which manages the Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy, encourages volunteerism through its Volunteers in Partnership program, in which selected volunteer projects are funded in an amount of up to $500. Also, BSA encourages volunteerism through the annual United Way campaign by matching up to $10,000 in funds to United Way for volunteer-hours donated by employees to United Way agencies.
Everyone attending the volunteer expo is asked to bring a can of food for Brookhaven Lab's food drive, which benefits Brookhaven Town food pantries. Amici's of Mount Sinai, Cooperage Inn of Baiting Hollow, Lombardi's of Middle Island, the Cradle of Aviation Museum, the Fire Island Lighthouse, Stony Brook University's Staller Center for the Arts, and others have donated gift certificates for door prizes at the expo.
