Three Northport-East Northport Students and Two Comsewogue Students Among Top Winners in Brookhaven Lab's 2006 Elementary School Science Fair
May 17, 2006
UPTON, NY - Three students from the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District and two students from the Comsewogue Union Free School District took first-place for different grade-categories in Brookhaven National Laboratory's 2006 Elementary School Science Fair. The other first-place winners included students from Eastport/South Manor Central School District and Faith Academy, a private school in Farmingville.
Some 517 projects created by over 600 students from 118 Suffolk County schools were entered in the contest. The diverse projects ranged from a kindergartner's experiment to find out "How Many Dunks Can You Get Out of a Chocolate Chip Cookie?" to a sixth-grader's investigation to find the answer to the question, "Does Yeast Cause a Banana to Decompose?" Brookhaven Lab scientists and local elementary school teachers judged the projects, based on scientific thought, creativity, thoroughness, and clarity.
Each of the seven first-place winners was awarded a medal, and banners were awarded to their schools. The first-place winners for each grade category are named with their projects, schools, and school districts below:
