Brookhaven Lab Holds 'Get Ready for Earth Day' Mini-Fair at Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library, April 9

UPTON, NY - The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory will hold a "Get Ready for Earth Day" mini-fair at the Mastics-Moriches-Shirley Community Library on Monday, April 9, from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will feature hands-on activities, displays, handouts, and a popular recycling quiz. Anyone who successfully completes the quiz will get a door prize, while supplies last.

Staff from the Laboratory's Environmental Services & Waste Management Division will be on hand to answer questions on how to safely dispose of hazardous household wastes. They will also discuss how to employ environmentally friendly pollution-prevention and recycling techniques.

A model of the Long Island aquifer, the sole source of local drinking water, will be on display, and Brookhaven Lab staff will explain how wells, landfills, and plumes of pollution interact with the aquifer. Children can learn about Long Island animals through an interactive activity about animals' footprints. In addition, visitors will be encouraged to be a U.S. Department of Energy's "Energy Star" by attempting the hand-cranked generator challenge, proving to themselves, their families and friends how much less energy a compact fluorescent light bulb uses than does an incandescent bulb.

The fair is open to all, no reservations required. The library is located at 407 William Floyd Parkway, Shirley. Call 631 344-5658 for more information.
