Brooklyn Technical High School Wins Science Bowl at Brookhaven Lab

UPTON, NY - Brooklyn Technical High School took first place in the Regional Science Bowl at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory.

Brookhaven Science Associates, the Long Island Science Center, and Teachers Federal Credit Union sponsored the local tournament, a fast-paced question-and-answer contest designed to test high school students' knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science, and general science.

The Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven, along with 67 others around the country, is part of the National Science Bowl competition coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. Since its inception in 1991, more than 130,000 high school students have participated in this "Jeopardy"-style contest. By competing in Science Bowl contests, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.

Eighteen schools from Long Island, Brooklyn and Queens participated in the regional competition hosted by Brookhaven Lab this year, on February 2, 2008. As the first-place winner, the Brooklyn Technical High School team received $500 in gift certificates, and the team is invited to participate in the National Science Bowl, which will be held in Washington, DC, on May 1-6. The second-place team, winning $250, was Ward Melville High School, East Setauket, who had previously placed first for four consecutive years. Comsewogue High School, Port Jefferson Station, placed third, winning $125; and MacArthur High School, Levittown, came in fourth, winning $75. All four winning teams received a trophy or plaque.
