Ward Melville High School Wins Science Bowl at Brookhaven Lab

UPTON, NY — Ward Melville High School took first place in the Regional Science Bowl at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory — the fifth time the team placed first in the last six years. Last year, the team placed second. Ward Melville competed against 19 other high school teams from Long Island in the 2009 regional competition hosted by Brookhaven Lab on January 31.

Brookhaven Science Associates, the Long Island Science Center and Teachers Federal Credit Union sponsored the local tournament, a fast-paced question-and-answer contest designed to test high school students’ knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science and general science.

The Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven, along with 67 others around the country, is part of the National Science Bowl® competition coordinated by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Since its inception in 1991, more than 130,000 high school students have participated in the “Jeopardy”-style contest. By challenging themselves in Science Bowl compeitions, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.

As the first-place winners, each of the Ward Melville team members received $100, and the team is invited to participate in the National Science Bowl®, which will be held in Washington, DC, on April 30 – May 5, 2009. Each of the students in the second-place team, Half Hollow Hills High School West, won $50; Farmingdale High School student-winners won $25 each for third-place; and Comsewogue High School took fourth place, winning $15 each. All four winning teams received a trophy.
