Farmingdale High School Wins Science Bowl at Brookhaven Lab

UPTON, NY — Farmingdale High School took first place in the Regional Science Bowl at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory, beating Half Hollow Hills West, which won second place. Comsewogue, North Shore and Ward Melville High Schools were division winners. Twenty four high school teams from Long Island competed in the 2010 regional competition hosted by Brookhaven Lab on January 30.

Brookhaven Science Associates, the Long Island Science Center and Teachers Federal Credit Union sponsored the local tournament, a fast-paced question-and-answer contest designed to test high school students’ knowledge of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, astronomy, earth science and general science.

The Regional Science Bowl at Brookhaven, along with 69 other regional contests around the country, is part of the National Science Bowl® competition coordinated by the Department of Energy’s Office of Science. Since its inception in 1991, more than 130,000 high school students have participated in the “Jeopardy”-style contest. By challenging themselves in Science Bowl competitions, students are encouraged to excel in science and math and to pursue careers in those fields.

As the first-place team, Farmingdale won $500, and the team is invited to participate in the National Science Bowl®, which will be held in Washington, DC, on April 29 – May 4, 2010. The second-place team won $250 and the division-winning teams each won $125. All five winning teams received medals and trophies.
