Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Mann joins NSBRI’s Board of Directors

HOUSTON — October 1, 2010 — Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Dr. Reinhold C. Mann has been elected to the Board of Directors for the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI). He is the associate laboratory director for environmental and life sciences at Brookhaven.
“Dr. Mann is a leader in research and development on a national and international level,” said Dr. Bobby R. Alford, NSBRI board chairman and chief executive officer. “His knowledge and experience will greatly benefit NSBRI in its mission to protect astronaut health and improve medical care on Earth.”
During a career that spans more than 30 years, Mann has served in management at some of the world’s top research institutes. Currently at Brookhaven, Mann is responsible for research and development programs in several fields, including biology and biotechnology. Prior to joining Brookhaven in June, Mann served as senior vice president for research and development at Battelle Science and Technology Malaysia in Kuala Lampur from November 2008 to June 2010.
Mann’s career includes positions at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in Richland, Wash. He worked at Oak Ridge from 1983-2001, where he held several positions, including director of the life sciences division. He served as chief research officer and associate laboratory director for fundamental science at PNNL from October 2001 to December 2003, where he managed $100 million of research funds in biological and environmental sciences. He returned to Oak Ridge in 2004 as the associate laboratory director for biological and environmental sciences, a role he served in until joining Battelle.
In addition to his full-time positions, Mann was chairman of the board of directors for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Bioenergy Science Center in 2007 and 2008 and was serving as senior consultant to the director at Oak Ridge. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electronics and Electrical Engineers and is a member of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also a past recipient of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Leader of the Year Award.
Mann holds a master’s degree in mathematics and a doctorate in biophysics from Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany.
NSBRI is a NASA-funded consortium of institutions studying the health risks related to long-duration spaceflight and developing countermeasures to mitigate the risks. The Institute’s science, technology and education projects take place at more than 60 institutions across the United States. Brookhaven National Laboratory is a member of the NSBRI consortium.
NSBRI projects address space health concerns, which include bone and muscle loss, cardiovascular changes, radiation exposure, neurobehavioral and psychosocial factors, remote medical care and research, and habitability and performance issues. Research findings also impact the understanding and treatment of similar medical conditions experienced on Earth.
