Statement on Worker Injury at Brookhaven Lab

A worker was injured around 11 a.m. today at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory after falling approximately 16 feet from a person-lift.

The worker, a contractor, was stabilized at the scene and transported by ambulance to Stony Brook University Medical Center. The extent of his injuries is not known at this time. The worker was conscious and talking to emergency response personnel before he was transported.

At the time of his fall, the contractor was on a person-lift working at the Lab’s former graphite research reactor. That reactor is currently in the process of being dismantled. Since he was working in a controlled area, the worker was scanned at the scene for radiation as per standard operating procedures, and that scan was negative.

The cause of the fall is not known at this time. The Laboratory has begun an investigation of the incident.
