Brookhaven National Laboratory to Reopen at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30

Minor damage from Hurricane Sandy

UPTON, NY — The Brookhaven National Laboratory site, closed at 8 a.m. on Monday, October 29 in advance of Hurricane Sandy, will reopen for all personnel at 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 30, and will be open during normal operating hours on Wednesday, October 31.

An initial assessment of the site found minor damage, including fallen trees, debris on roads, and slight wind damage to roofs and siding on several buildings. Additional assessments will continue this week.

Laboratory workers spent last week securing the site's 350-plus buildings and active construction sites, testing emergency generators, and safely shutting down experiments and facilities. The Lab opened its Emergency Operations Center on Monday morning and staffed it through the storm. About 100 on-site residents — mostly visiting scientists and their families — sheltered in place in their on-site residences.

Cleanup from the storm will continue as normal operations resume on Tuesday evening.
