The African American Affinity Group (AAAG) at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory is now accepting applications for the 2018 Vincent J. Castillo STEM Scholarship.

A $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a high school senior of African, West Indian, or Hispanic descent and who is a U.S. citizen residing in Suffolk County, pursuing a career in one of the STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) disciplines. High School seniors who demonstrate academic achievement, exhibit leadership ability, and exemplify a commitment to community service are encouraged to apply.

The scholarship's namesake, Vincent Castillo, worked in the Physics and Accelerator departments at Brookhaven Lab for 35 years, and actively participated in the Lab's college internship program as a mentor and in other diversity initiatives. He died in 2014. In honoring Castillo's commitment to higher education and support for underrepresented minorities in the sciences, his daughters Tara and Jerri, together with the AAAG, have partnered to establish this scholarship.

Applications must be emailed or postmarked by June 8 to be considered.

For more information and to download the application and cover letter guidelines, visit the AAAG website, or contact Juanita McKinney at 631-344-3915 or mckinney@bnl.gov.
