UPTON, NY—The U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory has named David Salbego as chief information officer (CIO) and Information Technology Division (ITD) manager. Salbego joined Brookhaven Lab from Argonne National Laboratory, where he was department head of IT Infrastructure & Operations since 2010.

With extensive experience and exceptional leadership skills, Salbego provides strategic leadership to develop and manage Brookhaven Lab's centralized computing, information, and business systems infrastructure.

Salbego's team in ITD consists of more than 100 staff members with expertise in IT infrastructure and operations, cyber security, business systems, data information, and information services. ITD's computing hardware, software, and telecommunications services support the Laboratory's 2,800 employees who work with collaborators across the country and around the world. Additionally, ITD is responsible for managing the research library, publications, and records management. ITD's annual budget is about $35 million.

“We are delighted to welcome David Salbego to the Brookhaven team,” said Brookhaven Deputy Director for Operations Ann Emrick. “His extensive experience and exceptional leadership qualities will surely help him lead our IT initiatives and ensure the continued success of Brookhaven's scientific endeavors.”

“I am honored to join Brookhaven National Laboratory and contribute to its mission of groundbreaking scientific research,” Salbego said. “I look forward to working closely with the dedicated team at ITD, leveraging innovative technologies to drive efficiency and enable transformative discoveries.”

Salbego assumed his new position from former Interim CIO Ian Ballantyne. The transition occurred in late March 2023, with Ballantyne returning to his role as the Lab's information security officer.

Salbego brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise. At Argonne, he successfully integrated multiple disciplines into one department, streamlined IT services, and positioned the division as an industry leader and strategic partner. He also served as a UNIX storage and operations manager, senior UNIX administrator, and scientific programmer at Argonne as well as senior infrastructure consultant for Tallan, Inc.

Salbego holds a Master of Science degree in computer science from the Illinois Institute of Technology and a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from Lewis University.
