Share Concerns, Recommendations Through New BNL CARES Resource

Lab leadership is committed to making Brookhaven a place where every employee feels heard, respected, and empowered to help improve how we work. To support that commitment, we’re launching “BNL CARES” — a new Labwide engagement resource for sharing concerns, suggested actions, and recommendations.
BNL CARES gives Lab staff a simple way to raise concerns, report near-misses, and offer ideas that could make our workplace safer, more effective, and better for one another. If you notice something that needs attention, experience a barrier to doing work efficiently, or see an opportunity for improvement, we want to hear from you.
BNL CARES is accessible from the intranet homepage in the section "Working Safely."
When submitting, you can choose to include your name if, for example, a follow-up is needed. You may also submit and remain anonymous. If you do include your name, it will not be displayed publicly on the BNL CARES site.
Your input will help us identify issues early, understand what staff are experiencing, and ensure that feedback is addressed by the appropriate organizations. Submissions will be reviewed and routed for follow-up. For increased transparency, staff can view all submissions received through BNL CARES.
BNL CARES, with its expanded functionality and focus, will replace the existing Environment, Safety & Health Issues and Suggestions form.
BNL CARES is intended to complement, not replace, other important ways to speak up:
- For immediate emergencies or urgent safety situations, call Ext. 2222 or 911 from a Laboratory phone, or (631) 344-2222 from your cell phone.
- Non-emergency safety issues may be reported to the Ext. 8800 hotline or by dialing (631) 344-8800 from your cell phone.
- For sensitive Human Resources (HR)-related concerns, including workplace conduct, employment, or personnel matters, employees should continue to use the HR Employee Concerns System or contact their HR representative directly.
- For building-related issues, contact your Facility Project Manager.
- For day-to-day conversations and leadership engagement, we encourage employees to speak directly with their supervisors and leaders.
- A list of ways to report concerns for a variety of other topics is available on the intranet.
These avenues serve different purposes, but they share one goal: ensuring that concerns, ideas, and feedback are heard and acted upon. Raising a concern is always encouraged, and employees should feel comfortable doing so.

Also, note that all the suggestions and concerns shared during the Labwide Safety Pause on July 2 have already been put into BNL Cares along with the actions taken or in progress. Thank you for your input and sharing your ideas!
