Dr. Marulanda joined BNL and NSLS-II as a postdoc in June 2021 as part of a multidisciplinary project using AI for multimodal analysis of XAS data that involved beamlines from 3 different synchrotrons of 3 National Labs. In November 2022, he joined NSLS-II as a full-time research staff where he has been a member of the Data Engineering (DE) group within the Data Science and Systems Integration (DSSI) Division. Later on, in May 2024, he took the additional role of DSSI Team Coordinator for the Complex Scattering (CS) program where he manages the effort and work of a group of 6 DSSI member to maintaining and supporting the Controls, DAQ, IT and Data infrastructure of 5 beamlines.

Dr. Marulanda is active developer and contributor to open-source projects for data access (Tiled) and for scientific experiment orchestration (Bluesky) which are scientific software tools that were developed initially at NSLS-II and now are part of a much larger community and they are used in other facilities around the world.

Dr. Marulanda has a lot of experience working in interdisciplinary projects prior and since the start of his appointment at BNL. Before BNL, he was part of a research team at the University of Idaho and under the supervision of the Office of Naval Research in charge of developing a fleet of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles for Oceanic Research. During his appointment at BNL, Dr. Marulanda joined the Co-Design Center for Quantum Advantage (C2QA) where he worked closely with other Research Scientists in Quantum Computing research.
