Takao Sakaguchi is a physicist at Brookhaven National Laboratory whose research investigates the quark-gluon plasma and other forms of strongly interacting nuclear matter created in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. His work combines experimental nuclear physics, detector and readout-electronics development, and leadership of large international collaborations.

Expertise

  • Relativistic heavy-ion and nuclear physics
  • Quark-gluon plasma and QCD matter
  • Direct photons, dileptons, and electromagnetic probes
  • High-transverse-momentum hadrons, jets, and parton energy loss
  • Particle-detector development and commissioning
  • Time projection chambers, GEM detectors, and front-end electronics
  • High-rate data acquisition, calibration, and detector operations

Research Activities

Sakaguchi has played leading roles in the PHENIX and sPHENIX experiments at RHIC. In PHENIX, he led analyses of direct photons and high-momentum hadrons to study electromagnetic radiation and parton energy loss in hot, dense nuclear matter. He also developed, installed, commissioned, and operated detector readout systems, including electronics for the RICH detector and controls for the Hadron Blind Detector.

For sPHENIX, he initiated and led development of the TPC readout-electronics program as L2 manager. His responsibilities have included the overall readout architecture, ASIC development, mass production, quality control, installation, commissioning, calibration, and mentoring researchers working with the detector and its data.

Earlier work included real-time space-radiation dosimetry and development of an electron-and-ion detector for the Nozomi Mars mission.

Education

  • Doctor of Science in Pure and Applied Physics, Waseda University, 1998
  • Master of Science in Pure and Applied Physics, Waseda University, 1996
  • Bachelor of Science in Pure and Applied Physics, Waseda University, 1994

Professional Appointments

Physicist, Brookhaven National Laboratory (2011-present); Visiting Researcher, RIKEN BNL Research Center (2015-present); and Visiting Researcher, Advanced Science Research Center, Japan Atomic Energy Agency (2022-present). Previously held physicist and research appointments at Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Center for Nuclear Study, University of Tokyo, including a JSPS Research Fellowship.
