Summary
Due to the high-power density, low operation temperatures, and zero emission of harmful gases, fuel cells with polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) are preferred energy sources for transportation. However, electrolyte components used in PEM fuel cells can poison anode and/or cathode catalyst materials of a PEM fuel cell and thereby reduce the power output and efficiency. Here we describe PEM cathode electrode with PtNiN catalyst loaded on to mesoporous carbon to address the issue
Description
Describes nitrogen doped platinum nickel (PtNiN) cathode catalyst nanoparticles loaded on mesoporous carbon, the PtNiN nanoparticles have an average diameter between about 1.0 nm and about 10.0 nm and the mesoporous carbon consists of a number of pores with a majority of pores having an average diameter of less than about 8.0 nm.
Benefits
Include addressing the issue of poisoning of anode and/or cathode catalyst materials of PEM fuel cells and reducing the cost by reducing the amount of noble metal used.
Applications and Industries
Cathode for PEM Fuel Cells.
