Amalie Emmy Noether Fellowship

Mentors

During their tenure, Noether Fellows will have the freedom to pursue independent research. Mentors will assure that any proposed work remains in line with Brookhaven and DOE’s priorities and the applied mathematics research output can be readily adopted by appropriate application domains within and beyond the Lab.

CSI staff can provide suggestions for mathematics-focused mentors. Noether Fellows also may select any scientist from CSI who aligns with their proposed research.

Amalie Emmy Noether, a German mathematician known for her contributions to abstract algebra, stands as a trailblazer in the field. She defied convention by earning a doctorate in mathematics in 1907 at a time when women typically were excluded from academic positions. In 1915 she proved Noether’s theorem, a fundamental of mathematical physics that explains the connection between symmetry and conservation laws.
