SAGE: Science Accelerating Girls' Engagement

SAGE is a free, one-week summer program for high school students (ages 14-17) hosted by National Laboratory scientists and engineers to share what life is like in STEM professions. Throughout the week, students will participate in job shadowing, hands-on projects, professional development, and more!  Learn more about the SAGE Journey here.

*Please note, this is a commuter program.

Program Goals

  • To encourage college-bound students with a passion for discovery and innovation to become a part of the STEM community
  • To show that STEM fields offer a diverse set of opportunities: you can balance your interests in artistic expression, historic research, and creative writing with application of your logical thinking, analytic skills, and computational ability

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn about the STEM  community and what everyday life of a scientist or engineer is like.
  • See how STEM allows you to explore and balance many interests.
  • Meet STEM professionals at various stages of their career as well as meet and connect with other students with similar interests to become a part of the SAGE community.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The ideal SAGE participant is curious with a passion for discovery and innovation and has not yet committed to pursuing a STEM major in college.
  • Grade - must be a current (Spring 2025) 9th, 10th, or 11th grade student
  • Age - must be under 18 years of age for the program's duration (ages 14-17)
  • U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident (green card holder) of the U.S.
  • Active health insurance for the duration of the program

Application Requirements

  • Application Deadline is TBD
  • Status updates to all applicants will be sent out by TBD
  • You will need to provide a name and email address of a teacher/coach/mentor (non-family member) who can recommend you. 
  • You will be asked four short answer questions. You're welcome to write out your response in a separate document and copy and paste it in to your application when prompted. 

    1. How do you spend your time outside of the classroom? (hobbies, extracurricular activities at or outside of school, jobs, volunteer work, etc.)
    2.  Tell us briefly, why are you applying to SAGE?
    3. Briefly describe a challenging situation (home, school, outdoors, work, etc) where you shared a different point of view with a group, based on your experience. How did your input help address the challenging situation in the group?
    4. In what ways have you demonstrated a drive to acquire new skills and knowledge in your life? How have you applied these new abilities to solve problems creatively?
