QIS 101: Foundations of Quantum Information Science
The Co-design Center for Quantum Advantage offers a six-week virtual program to introduce undergraduate and graduate students, recent college graduates, and academic educators to the exciting world of quantum information science (QIS).
During QIS 101, led by David Biersach, students will learn how quantum algorithms, when applied to specific problems, can outperform classical computers. Through a series of demonstrations and hands-on programming labs, students will learn how to use IBM Qiskit — a world-class software package for working with quantum computers.
Students will hear from guest scientists, including Brookhaven scientific researchers and C2QA leadership, and virtually tour some of Brookhaven Lab’s world-renowned facilities. Each tour will be followed by an interactive Q&A session hosted by the facility tour hosts.
Program Benefits

- No fee to apply or attend
Eligibility Criteria
- At least 18 years of age by the program start date
- U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S.
- If enrolled in spring 2026 coursework, will have completed all courses by the program start date
- Access to a computer installed with Microsoft Windows 11 or Apple Mac PC and capable of installing 100% open-source courseware and tools. Google Chromebooks do not meet this criterion.
- A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license (features a star in the upper right corner), an enhanced driver’s license (features an American flag in the lower corner), or a valid passport. More information about ID requirements can be found here: www.bnl.gov/real-id.
- Participants who are offered a conditional acceptance will be required to apply for and receive a BNL guest appointment by the program start date. Please note that your approval for a BNL guest appointment may take up to 45 days.
