Ward Melville Student Wins Brookhaven Lab's Science and Society Essay Contest

Upton, NY - Mitchell Fourman, a Ward Melville High School student, won the grand prize of $1,000 in the Science and Society Essay Contest sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. Lauren Thompson, Garden City High School, won third prize, and received $200. Margaret Brown, Longwood High School (not present for the photo), won $300 as second-place winner.

The top three winners were chosen from 177 essays submitted by high school students from throughout Long Island. Nine honorable-mention prizes of $50 each were also awarded in a ceremony at Brookhaven Lab. The essay topic was how breakthroughs in nanotechnology will impact society in the future. A panel of four independent judges chose the winning essays based on critical thinking, scientific accuracy, creativity, and organization.

Managed by the Laboratory's Office of Educational Programs, the essay contest was started five years ago by a Brookhaven Lab employee organization called Friends of Brookhaven. Brookhaven Science Associates, the company that runs the Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy, sponsored the prizes for the contest.

The honorable-mention winners were Rachel Cluett, Earl L. Vandermeulen High School; Deirdre Collaso, Plainedge High School; Paul Enzinger, Saint Anthony's High School; Tina Ho, Smithtown High School; Benedict Huang, Longwood High School; Jacob Kraus, Miller Place High School; Jennifer Lee and Steven Locurto, both from Hicksville High School; and Kevin Wang, Ward Melville High School.
