Upton, NY - Kenneth White, who served as Interim Manager of the Office of Educational Programs (OEP) at the U.S. Department of Energy_s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory since December 2003, has been named Manager of OEP, effective March 1.
"With an almost all new staff at OEP, we are ready to work with the research and technical staff to increase student placements and to explore other educational opportunities," White said. "We want our programs to grow and to make sure OEP is viewed as an important resource to help further the mission of Brookhaven and the Department of Energy."
The Laboratory has several core educational programs supported by DOE_s Office of Science, Office of Workforce Development: Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships, in which undergraduate students participate in research programs directed by Brookhaven staff for a semester or during the summer; the Community College Institute, which offers 10-week summer internships in biotechnology, computers and environmental science; the Pre-Service Teacher Program, in which teachers in training are paired with Brookhaven scientist-mentors and also attend master teacher courses; a new pilot program, called the Laboratory Science Teachers Professional Development Program, which offers special training and research experiences for science, mathematics and technology teachers, and a second-year program that brings faculty and student teams to Brookhaven for ten weeks.
In addition, the Laboratory offers a variety of programs for students ranging from elementary school to college-level. For example, over 20,000 students and teachers discover science by participating in hands-on activities through the Laboratory_s Science Museum Programs, and about 500 elementary school students enter Brookhaven_s science fair each year. Brookhaven also offers apprenticeships for ninth and tenth grade minority high school students and a six-week research experience for eleventh and twelfth grade students.
Kenneth White earned a B.S. in engineering technology from the University of the State of New York, Regents College, Albany, in 1990, and an M.B.A. from Dowling College in 2003.
