Tour Plane, Meet Scientists Participating in Air-Sampling Study

DOE G-1 Gulfstream open for media tours at Latrobe airport

EVENT: Tours of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) - operated Gulfstream G-1 aircraft and interviews with DOE scientists sampling the Western Pennsylvania skies this summer as part of an international air quality and climate study.

WHEN: Monday, August 2, 2004, 8 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. (Media must arrive by 9 a.m. so the scientists can ready the aircraft for takeoff.)

WHERE: At the main terminal building of Arnold Palmer Regional Airport, Latrobe, PA, about 5 miles east of Greensburg on Route 981, 3 miles south of Route 30. Ask for Brian Torok, captain of airport security.

DETAILS: The DOE scientists from Argonne National Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are conducting air-sampling flights aboard the Gulfstream G-1 aircraft from July 20 to August 15. The plane is outfitted with research-grade instruments to sample the air for aerosol pollutants so the scientists can evaluate their effects on Earth's climate. The research is part of the International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT) experiment, a large, multiagency study with partners from the National Atmospheric and Oceanographic Administration (NOAA), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the University of New Hampshire, and others in Canada and Europe (see http://www.al.noaa.gov/ICARTT/ and http://www.bnl.gov/bnlweb/pubaf/pr/2004/bnlpr062804.htm ).
