Brookhaven Lab's Volunteer Expo Draws About 300 Participants

UPTON, NY - About 300 people attended the recent Volunteer Expo at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. Sponsored by the Laboratory's Volunteers in Partnership (V.I.P.) committee, the expo featured representatives from 30 local charitable and community organizations — from the American Red Cross to the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary — who discussed opportunities for volunteerism and provided information about their services to Brookhaven employees, retirees, and members of the local community. Also, Brookhaven employees who volunteer for these organizations were on hand to talk about their volunteer experiences.

Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA), which manages the Laboratory for the U.S. Department of Energy, encourages volunteerism through its V.I.P. program, in which selected volunteer projects are funded in an amount up to $500. Also, BSA encourages volunteerism through the annual United Way campaign by matching up to $10,000 in funds to United Way for volunteer-hours donated by employees to United Way agencies. Currently, about 20 percent of the Laboratory's employees perform volunteer work.

Joining them are Eileen Callihan (left), volunteer coordinator for Little Flower Children's Services, an agency for which Gray volunteers; and Mardythe DiPirro, Associate Director for Peconic Community Council.
