Women in Science High School Career Day at Brookhaven Lab

UPTON, NY - Twenty-five female students from Bellport High School and Eastport-South Manor Central High School recently learned about careers in science and related fields from female researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory. Coordinated by Brookhaven Women in Science and funded by Brookhaven Science Associates, high school career days are held twice yearly at the Laboratory. At a recent career day, researchers in biology, atmospheric sciences, chemistry, and physics talked about their work and the skills that are necessary to prepare for it.

The students toured the National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), where researchers use x-ray, ultraviolet and infrared light to probe materials as diverse as computer chips and viruses, and the magnet factory, where scientists build superconducting magnets for particle accelerators around the world. They also had fun with interactive exhibits at Brookhaven's Science Museum.
