Indian Classical Dance Performance at Brookhaven Lab, June 18

UPTON, NY - Jayalakshmi Eshwar, an internationally renowned classical dancer from India, will present a demonstration of various classical Indian dance styles, followed by a performance featuring the dance style known as Bharata Natyam, at the U.S. Department of Energy's Brookhaven National Laboratory on Saturday, June 18, at 4:30 p.m. Sponsored by the Brookhaven Employees Recreation Association's (BERA) Indo-American Association, the event is open to the public. All visitors to the Laboratory age 16 and over must bring a photo ID.
Jayalakshmi Eshwar is the founder and director of the Abhinay School of Dance in New Delhi, India. Abhinay is a nonprofit organization that promotes Indian culture and art in India and around the world. The school provides instruction in Bharata Natyam for professional and amateur dancers, promotes cultural activities in rural India, and conducts performances and lecture-demonstrations. Eshwar has performed extensively in India and abroad, and she is also author of the online book titled, "Bharata Natyam: How to?"
One of seven major classical dance forms in India, Bharata Natyam originated about 2,000 years ago and was performed in the temples and courts of southern India during religious ceremonies. Today, Bharata Natyam is one of India's most popular dance styles and is performed by both male and female dancers all around the country.
Tickets for the performance, with snacks included, cost $8 each for adults, $5 for children age 5 and above, and $30 for families. Tickets may be purchased at the BERA store in
the Laboratory's Berkner Hall on weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., or at the door on the evening of the performance. Call 631 344-4862 for more information. The Laboratory is located on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46), one-and-a-half miles north of Exit 68 of the Long Island Expressway.
