Suffolk County Legislature Honors Brookhaven Lab for Educational Programs

UPTON, NY - The Suffolk County Legislature has honored the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory with a proclamation "for its exemplary work on behalf of the children of Suffolk County." Specifically, the legislature honored Brookhaven for sponsoring its annual elementary school science fair for 20 years. Over the last two decades, some 14,000 children have participated in the fair.

The Brookhaven Lab science fair recognizes the achievements of kindergarten through sixth-grade winners from local elementary school science fairs. The winners from across Suffolk County come to Brookhaven Lab, where Laboratory staff and local teachers evaluate their projects. The winning student in each grade level receives a large banner to display at his/her school. The fair is designed to celebrate academic achievement and promote science literacy. The Laboratory's Office of Educational Programs (OEP) organizes the science fair, and it is run with the help of many volunteers from Brookhaven Lab and the community each year.
